We place great importance on the training of all our instructors. We have one aim, that is to get you through first time. Please remember however that we cannot get you through if you do not give 100%.

HOW DO I QUALIFY TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?

You must hold a full British or Northern Ireland unrestricted car licence, and not have been disqualified from driving in the last 4 years prior to being entered into the register. All convictions including motoring offences still in force will be taken into account.

To become an ADI instructor, there are three stages of qualification. All three must be successfully completed before you are fully qualified.

• Part 1: The Theory Test, a computer based exam taken in a number of centres across the UK.

• Part 2: The test of driving ability, a practical test of your driving ability taken at our local test centre at Folkestone.

• Part 3: the test of instructional ability, a practical test of your ability to instruct taken at our local test centre. You must pass all parts within two years of taking the written test.

 
HOW DO I GO ABOUT APPLYING?

We will let you have all the relevant information once you decide to train with us. We will supply the application forms and give you all the help you will need to complete them. You are allowed three attempts at each of the practical tests & if you do not pass you must wait 2 years before you can retake, starting once again with the written exam. You will have to pay a fee for each attempt at each part of the qualifying exam. Details of the fees are as follows:

(Pt 1 = £75, Pt 2 = £75, and Pt 3 = £85. PDI Licence £100)

You will also have to pay for your certificate of registration once you are qualified, the current charge for this is £200 every 4 years.

 
CAN I HAVE A TRAINEE LICENSE?

Yes, most of the larger driving schools make a very good living out of using trainee instructors on a franchise basis. They charge you about £260 a week and do not have to provide pupils for you! Sometimes they won't tell you this until after you have paid them about £2800 for the privilege of their training ...... leaving a lot to be desired!
 

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I PASS?

You will have an idea before you start ADI training of how you want to progress in the business. You may want to be your own boss and run your own school, or work for a larger school to gain vital experience before going it alone. We will give you all the help and support needed before deciding.

 
ADI COURSE FEES

To become a good driving instructor does not come cheaply; there is no substitute for high class professional training. At Kingston we pride ourselves on our very high (over 90%) pass record and we aim to keep it that way. We charge a fee of £2500 for the complete course. Should you fail part 2 or 3 of the course, we will prepare you for a re-test at hourly rates.
 

METHOD OF PAYMENT

If you prefer, you may pay as you take each stage. You may also be eligible to apply for a career development loan, you should be able to get further information from your local employment office.

 
WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

If you would like to have an informal chat about being a professional driving instructor, all you need to do is telephone our office for an appointment. We will be happy to go through every aspect for you. We only take two trainees at a time, this gives maximum attention to you! Please remember that there is no easy short cut to becoming an ADI.

 
TRAINING COURSE

Training for Part 1 will mostly be done from the comfort of your own home. We will supply you with the necessary material for studying and will mark your mock exams once you have complete each one.

For Part 2, training will be in a car for one week (20 hours) where you will be put through your paces on all aspects of driving. This will get you up to the very high standard that is required to pass the test.

Part 3 training of your course will be held in Folkestone where you will undergo methods of instruction training, in one of our car's. You will be taught how to prepare and teach every lesson in the syllabus.

Training will take two weeks (40 hours). During that time you will also be able to see fully qualified instructors in operation getting their pupils ready for their driving test.
